Senate Approves 1-yr Severance Pay For Sacked NIMC Workers

The Senate on Wednesday approved the payment of one year salary as severance allowance to each of the 3099 staff sacked by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in August, 2012.

The Senate also approved the reabsorption of 96 staff.

The decision of the Senate followed the consideration and subsequent passage of the report of its Joint Committee on National Identity and Population, Labour and Productivity and Ethics and Petitions.

The aggrieved staff had petitioned the National Assembly over their disengagement from service by the management of the NIMC and have severally occupied the National Assembly in protests.

In the report, the Joint Committee observed that in view of the harsh economic situation in the country, it was not proper to lay-off over 3000 staff in one fell swoop.

The Joint Committee noted that the maximum severance allowance of N361, 000 paid to the disengaged staff was too meagre for staff who had served for about 30 years.

Findings by the Joint Committee also showed that the NIMC pegged the minimum qualification at HND and First Degree and 682 who had acquired additional requisite qualification were retained.

The Joint Committee said that some junior workers who upgraded their qualification level to HND and first degree were still disengaged from the commission.

The chairman of the Joint Committee, Sen. Wilson Ake said the NIMC took over the assets of the defunct Department of National Civic Registration (DNCR) through the NIMC Act of 2007.
