Governor of the State of Osun, Otunba (Mrs.) Grace Titilayo
Laoye-Tomori, stated this in her speech titled ‘The Role of Women in
Nigerian Politics’, delivered at the 2nd National Women’s Summit with
the theme: ‘Women as Pioneers of Change’ organized by the Oyo State
Officials’ Wives’ Association led by wife of the Oyo State Governor,
Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, held at Kakanfo Inn, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Emergence of a female president has been described as the major antidote towards making a major change in Nigeria’s political scene.
Laoye-Tomori, who called on women to continue to push for a change in the current political structure of the country and to be active participants in the nation’s political trend, said such views should be impacted in young girls as the future belongs to them.
Speaking on the way out of the present situation the country finds herself, the Osun deputy governor said; “For me, the role of women begins in the collective resolve to build together the social foundation upon which the modern political participation of the society will be based. Our foremost task as women is to identify the disabling factors in our present social condition of living, and move to remedy such situations. We need to launch and re-launch repeated assaults on socio-cultural inhibitions, norms and values that have held the female gender down from time immemorial”.
Describing major roles of women in every sector of the nation’s economy, Laoye-Tomori called on major stakeholders to improve on their efforts in mobilizing and sustaining women’s rights through grassoots participation.
Osun deputy governor however used the opportunity to commend the state governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, for being gender-sensitive as witnessed in his style of appointments.
She however said improving on girl-child education in Nigeria is a major key towards attaining the 35 per cent Affirmative Action Policy in the nation’s political sector.
Speaking on the topic; ‘Women, Achieve Your Full Poential’, Lagos State deputy governor, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, said women should promote peace in their homes and help their husbands to attain their full potentials.
Adefulire said women should be involved in their husbands’ visions adding there lies their peace and future of their children.
Speaking on how to activate and maintain a healthy marriage and successful home, Barrister Rose Oyedele described intimacy between husband and wife as a vital key to the promotion of healthy living at home and the nation at large.
While condemning gender inequality among Africans, Prof. (Mrs.) Modupe Onadeko urged parents to bring up their children in a manner devoid of any preferential treatment.
In her remark, wife of the Benue State Governor, Architect Oluwayemisi Doorshima Suswam, said women should be empowered irrespective of political, cultural, educational and religious affiliations to bring out the best in them so as to make positive change in Nigeria.
